LOCAL SDLP MLA Cara Hunter has said the sharp rise in private rents across Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council is placing unsustainable pressure on local people, after new figures revealed average rents have increased by 48% over five years.
The data shows rents in the area have risen from £548 in Q1 2020 to £811 in Q4 2025, an increase of £263 per month.
Ms Hunter said the figures reflect what many local people are already experiencing, with renters facing growing costs while housing supply continues to fall.
"These figures show just how difficult things have become for renters across the North Coast. Rents are rising beyond what people here can realistically afford, and it's putting huge strain on individuals and families," she said.
"A 48% increase in just five years is simply unsustainable. For many, that's hundreds of pounds extra every month just to keep a roof over their head.
"This is hitting young people particularly hard, as those trying to move out, start their careers or build a future here at home are being priced out of their own communities. We are also seeing workers, families and even key staff struggling to secure housing locally, which has wider impacts on our economy and public services.
"At the heart of this crisis is a lack of supply. There are fewer rental properties available, more people competing for them, and that imbalance is driving up prices at an alarming rate. We urgently need action from the Executive. That means increasing the supply of social and affordable housing, supporting renters and delivering meaningful reform of the private rental sector.
"People across Causeway Coast and Glens deserve secure, affordable homes. Without intervention, this situation will only continue to get worse."
