AFTER 20 years and over £1m raised to fight poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, trustees of the Zomba Action Project (ZAP) have decided to close down the charity.
The project was set up in 2003 as a partnership between the old Coleraine Borough Council and Zomba City Council in southern Malawi.
Aside from strengthening cultural ties between the two municipalities, the project has funded dozens of life-changing grass roots initiatives including delivering clean water, improving healthcare, enhancing education and empowering communities to build brighter futures.
A proposal to formally close the charity was agreed by trustees at their AGM earlier this month.
In a letter to Causeway Coast and Glens Council (which succeeded Coleraine Borough Council as Zomba's partner), Chairman Terry McMullan explained the charity had been unable to find youthful replacements for ageing board members.
