THREE XL Bull dogs gave been “humanely destroyed” in Causeway Coast and Glens since new controls on the breed were introduced in January.
Responsibility of enforcing the new law lies with councils and news of the three deaths was delivered to members of Cloonavin’s Environmental Services Committee on Tuesday evening.
A committee report explained that controls have been in place for pitbulls and three other dangerous breeds since 1991.
However, in 2024 following a spate of fatal attacks, the dog type known as XL Bull dogs was also added to the list of prohibited breeds
From December 31, it been an offence to possess an XL Bull dog unless the owner has an exemption certificate issued under the relevant legislation.
