ULSTER University has taken a significant step towards removing one of the most distinctive features of Coleraine’s skyline.
As the Chronicle reported back in January, the demolition of the university’s ten-storey tower block is to a key element in a £15m campus revamp.
And now, a formal planning application for its removal has been lodged.
Documents accompanying the application refer to “wind-tunnel” and “down-draft effects” plus the vast shadow it casts over the entrance plaza.
They state: “The 10 storey tower block has significantly exceeded its design life and is in need of extensive refurbishment both internally and externally including structural repairs, building services replacement and thermal upgrades to reduce energy use.
“Feasibility studies have shown that the internal space dimensionally is unfit for modern university space uses, pedagogies and connectivity requirements.
“This planning application seeks to resolve these fundamental access, arrival experience and redundant building challenges.”
