The SDLP has been left with only two members on Causeway Coast and Glens Council following the resignation of Margaret Anne McKillop.
The Cushendall-based representative quit the party yesterday over its position on abortion.
She told the Irish News: “I can no longer, in good faith, continue as a member of the SDLP.
“I will continue to serve my constituents as an independent councillor, staying true to the values that brought me into politics – and that I still hold dear.”
Mckillop sat on the old Moyle District Council before being elected to Causeway Coast and Glens in 2015 when local authorities merged.
Her resignation leaves just Michael Colye (Benbradagh) and Ashleen Schenning (Limavady) occupying the SDLP benches.
A spokesman for the SDLP said: “We acknowledge Councillor McKillop’s decision and wish her well in the future.”
