WORK is to start later this month on essential repairs to the historic footbridge that spans Portrush Harbour.

The bridge was built in the mid 19th century to provide railway access to the quayside but has been used exclusively by pedestrians since the 1970s.

In 2023 Causeway Coast and Glens Council engaged specialist engineers to asses damage to the original stone pillars that support the modern walkway.

And last month councillors approved a £274,000 contract for the repairs.
