THE Communities Minster has promised to write to Ulster University to highlight Stormont Assembly members’ concerns over the future of the Riverside Theatre.

Coleraine-born Minster Gordon Lyons was speaking during a debate secured by East Londonderry MLA Cara Hunter after the Vice Chancellor revealed the Coleraine venue’s future was under review.

Mr Lyons was eager to point out that his department has no role in the funding or oversight of the university.

But he did acknowledge an interest from from both the Arts Council and the Department for Communities

Officials from both bodies would be happy to provide insight and advice on arts provision generally in the Causeway Coast and Glens Area, he said.

The Minister added: “I am confident that the university's considerations will take account of the role that a venue such as the Riverside Theatre plays in the cultural and social life of its hinterland.

“I am happy to write to the Chancellor following the debate to highlight the issues that have been raised and the concerns that Members have expressed in the Chamber.”

Earlier in the debate, DUP MLA Maurice Bradley said he met university officials the previous week.

Six options for the theatre’s future had been presented to him, he added.

“Only one was for closure; the other five were diverse but achievable.”
