A MUCH loved family owned Coleraine cafe has closed its doors for the final time after serving customers for six decades.
Heralds at 22, on the town’s Church Street, announced on Facebook: “It is with mixed emotions that tomorrow, 28th December, the cafe will close after 60 years of serving Coleraine community and visitors to the North Coast.”
Heralds at 22 first opened its doors to the public in April 1964, when Mona and Willie Herald launched the small town centre cafe as a Wimpy Bar.
In April 2024, when celebrating their 60th year in business, their daughter Paula O’Kane, the now former proprietor, told the Coleraine Chronicle that when her father first opened, he: “Wasn’t too sure what to do with the shop unit when he secured it but, while playing golf with a friend from Belfast, his friend mentioned that a Wimpy Bar had opened in Belfast.
“At the time, the bar was all the rage with beef burgers, perfectly rounded fried eggs, square fish shanty burgers and curly rounded sausage bender burgers,” recalled Paula.
