Pinpointing the exact spot were a back-pack was found, could be the key to unlocking the case of a missing hiker.

That's why police are desperate to speak to two males who handed the bag into Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre last Saturday.

For almost a week, police and volunteers from the National Trust, HM Coastguard and the Community Rescue Service have been searching for Lester McLennon.

It's believed the 20-year-old travelled to the Causeway from Belfast by bus at approximately 9.30am on Friday, November 1.

Later that day, a group of walker encountered a man they believed to be Lester on the cliff path between the Causeway and Dunseverick.

But he hasn't been seen since.

The last confirmed trace from his phone was around 5.30pm from within the World Heritage Site

On Saturday afternoon however, two males handed in a black backpack to staff at the audio guide desk in the Giant's Causeway visitor centre.

And because an alert about Lester's disappearance had yet to be distributed, the significance of the bag's recovery was not registered.

But the spot where it was found could provide crucial clues to Lester's whereabouts.

Therefore, finding the two men who handed it in has become a police priority.

CCTV pictures of the bag handover have been issued.

The pair's clothes suggest they are keen hikers but whether or not they are locals or overseas visitors is unknown.

Both police and the National Trust have appealed for them to come forward.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.

Lester himself is described as a white male, 6ft 3in tall, of slim build, with light brown hair.

He was wearing black glasses, light beige trousers with a dark belt, walking boots, a long grey coat to below the knee and a dark zip-up jacket.

He was also carrying a black backpack.

Lester's mother and father have spent the last week on the North Coast waiting desperately for news.

Lalitha McLennon is among those to urge the two men who recovered the rucksack to come forward.

She told a Belfast newspaper her son loved hiking and natural spaces and had been excited to see the Giant's Causeway.

Police are appealing to Lester or anyone who may have seen him on November 1 or 2 to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 76 02/11/24.

Police have also asked residents, businesses, landowners and farmers along the coast between Bushmills and Ballycastle to check their property and any sheds and outhouses.
