Abolishing second home tax breaks could aid long-term rental market

THE scrapping of tax breaks for buy-to-let holiday home owners could help families struggling to find private rented accommodation on the North Coast.

That was the suggestion made by The Northern Ireland Federation of Housing Associations (NIFHA) this week.

The association’s Chief Executive Seamus Lehney said incentives abolished by the Chancellor in his spring budget had been exacerbating the shortage of affordable private housing in coastal towns.

And he welcomed Jeremy Hunt’s decision to scrap them in the hope a fairer balance between holiday lets and year-round family homes could be struck.
