PLANNERS have approved refurbishment work and the reinstallation of the historic footbridge at Castlerock station.

In 2019 the ironwork bridge was removed from the site where its stood for over a century for structural repairs.

Since then, its been lying at the council’s depot, the subject of wrangling between its owners Translink and Causeway Coast and Glens Council which inherited responsibility for its maintenance from the old Coleraine Borough Council.

In July, officers lodge an application for Listed Building Consent – required from planners when alterations are carried out to any listed structure.

This week planners gave the scheme an approval recommendation.

“The proposal will see the footbridge rehabilitated to restore its structural integrity and fitness for purpose,” their report states.
