The inaugural Future Legends Competition was played in conjunction with the Black Desert NI Legends event at Galgorm Golf Club from August 29-31.
A field of 16 boys were invited to play alongside a field of 60 Legends Tour Professionals under tournament conditions.
Portstewart GC was kindly invited by the host club Galgorm to enter four boys to play in the field. These boys were Eoin Campbell, Dara Hughes, Rhys Jones and Daniel Henry - all members of the club’s Fred Daly team.
The first day of competition involved the boys playing in a Pro-Am event under Tour Scramble rules. As part of this competition the boys played in two fourballs alongside Legends Tour Professionals Greg Owen and Van Phillips.
After the Pro-Am the boys then participated in a two-day 36-hole Stableford competition. This was an individual competition and gave the boys the opportunity to experience playing in a competitive tour event.
As part of the competition live scoring was in operation and the boys’ friends and family were able to follow their progress in live time as the boys played. The boys all played admirably and despite very inclement weather on the second day they earned great praises from their professional playing partners.
These playing partners included Andrew Marshall, Patrick Sjoland, Jeev Milka Singh and Steve Webster. Whilst playing alongside these professionals the boys were able to observe how they approached competitive play and performed under tournament pressures.
As part of the experience the boys were given unlimited player access to all onsite facilities. This included full use of the practice facilities and access to the clubhouse for meals and refreshments. The experience then concluded with an invite to a gala dinner and prize giving at Galgorm Manor Hotel.
Whilst unsuccessful on the golf course all the boys gained fantastic experience of tournament golf and left having made many new friendships with both professional and amateur competitors.
The boys are very appreciative of the opportunity to participate in the Future Legends event and wish to record their appreciation and thanks to the Captain of Galgorm Golf Club for their kind invitation to play.
