Coleraine forward James Akintunde is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a serious injury during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Glentoran at the Oval.

The popular front man was stretchered off early in the game and taken to hospital where it was confirmed he has suffered an ankle fracture-dislocation.

"This is a very significant and serious injury which will carry a long recovery time," said a Coleraine FC spokesperson.

"James will now be transferred to Derry/Londonderry where he will undergo surgery in the coming days.

"Our thanks go to all of the medical professionals, stewards and staff both at The Oval and at the hospital for their care and attention to James.

"The focus of everybody at the club is on giving James the support he needs during this very difficult time for him.

"We would like to place on record a big thanks to all the medics, stewards, physios, and staff for aiding James Akintunde after suffering a horrible injury early into yesterday’s game

"Finally, we would like to thank both sets of supporters for their support to James inside the stadium as he was taken from the field of play," the spokesperson added.
