THE annual Portrush Christmas Walk in aid of Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI is back for its 38th year.
When Lynda Giffin sadly passed away in 1988 after being diagnosed with leukaemia, her parents decided to hold a sponsored walk to allow her friends to come together and raise money in her memory.
No less than 38 years later and the Portrush Walk for Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI is still going strong and has raised over £215,000 for local blood cancer research.
Now organised by Lynda’s two sisters, Janet Leighton and Jill Adams, the walk takes place on 27th December at 1pm.
The six mile walk round Ramore Head and along the coast to Whiterocks beach provides a perfect opportunity to walk off the excesses of Christmas whilst enjoying the beauty of the North Coast.
Participants can register from 12.15pm at the Harbour Bar, Portrush. All the money raised at the walk will benefit local charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI who fund research into blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related conditions.
Richard Buchanan, Chair of Leukaemia and Lymphoma NI, said, “We are again so grateful for this support from the Giffin family and for the work they and others put into organising this brilliant event each year.
“The money raised goes towards blood cancer research in Northern Ireland, which helps to ensure more people survive these horrible cancers, with quality of life.
“And of course, the walk is a chance to get outside with friends along a stunning piece of our coastline, all for a great cause.”
Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI (LLNI) aim to improve quality of life and survival rates for blood cancer patients by supporting clinicians, scientists and students researching these diseases in Northern Ireland.
