THE Rotary Club of Coleraine has raised £5,000 for the The Prostate Cancer Research team in Queen’s University, Belfast.
The charity been involved in fundraising for the team since November 2021, when a very well attended fundraising and educational evening in the Lodge Hotel, Coleraine was addressed by Professor Joe O’Sullivan.
Following COVID, the Club financially supported a summer research student at the centre.
Last week members of The Rotary Club presented a cheque for £5,000 to Linda Megrath, Prostate Cancer Centre of Excellence project manager, Niamh Murphy, Ross Murphy, and Stephen O’Reilly of the research team.
This recent amount was recently raised at a dinner in the Bushfoot Golf Club, Portballintrae when the guest speaker was Professor Suneil Jain, Professor of Clinical Oncology and a colleague of Professor Joe.
“It is a sobering thought that more than 1,200 men are diagnosed in Northern Ireland annually with 290 men dying from this disease,” commented a spokesperson for the club.
“While most men diagnosed with prostate cancer will live a long time, ongoing challenges remain in developing and selecting the best treatment for individuals at each stage of their disease.
“This is where we in The Rotary Club of Coleraine will continue our relationship with the centre and with the support of the community continue to raise funds which will support research into innovative ways to beat prostate cancer.”
