House of Commons Speaker, John Bercow has revealed he is a fan of Northern Ireland golfer Rory McIlroy during a question and answer session on the benefits of the Open Championship.
As East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell rose to speak in the debate, Mr Bercow warned he'd be prevented from doing so unless he made favourable reference to the golfer.
“If the Hon Gentleman intends favourably to reference Rory McIlroy, I will call him. If he does not, I will not,” said the Speaker.
In response to the demand, Mr Campbell volunteered the opinion that Rory was “one of the best golfers in the world.”
Satisfied by this assessment, Mr Bercow permitted the MP to continue with his questioning of NI Minister of State John Penrose on economic opportunities surrounding the event.
The minister told Mr Campbell he would happily meet Invest NI ahead of the Open to ensure potential investment opportunities were maximised.
