The council has approved Ulster University plans to erect a giant statue to mark the 50th anniversary of its Coleraine campus.

Planners gave the green light for the 30ft sculpture at the Lodge Road roundabout last week

According to Provost, Professor Karisse Hutchinson, it will reflect the university's “unique and continued contribution to the area”.

Designed by a local artist, Sara Cunningham-Bell, current plans depict a student dressed in a gradation gown holding aloft a quadrant representing research, innovation and inventiveness.
