Causeway nurses facing violent attacks from patients

Fifty-eight health care staff were attacked at Causeway Hospital last year with nurses bearing the brunt of violence while trying to treat patients, the Chronicle can exclusively reveal.

The shocking figure follows repeated warnings from District Judge Liam McNally that the courts will not tolerate attacks on staff or disorderly behaviour at the Coleraine hospital.

During recent months there has been a catalogue of cases involving violence and anti-social behaviour at Causeway Hospital; sometimes several in one sitting alone at Coleraine Courthouse.

Across the Northern Trust area last year there were 452 attacks on nurses at work with nine doctors assaulted and six other health care staff subjected to physical abuse.
