Two members of staff from Ballysally Primary School have been nominated for top awards in the Family First Spring Awards in early March.

School Principal Geoff Dunne and P6 teacher Jonny Doey have been put forward for ‘Best Principal’ and ‘Best Primary School Teacher’ respectively, and the pair admit that they are “humbled” by the recent news.

Speaking to the Chronicle, school Principal Geoff explained how he was taken back by the news.

“It was such a shock because the way it all transpired was when the representative from Families First came out to the school to see Mr Doey,” he said.

“I explained a little bit of the background to the school and about Jonny as well and I was later contacted to say that they were impressed by the school and that they wanted to put me forward for the best principal award.

“I was in total shock and I was not sure how to respond and at the end of it all I said yes,” he added.

Jonny Doey is Ballysally born and bred and insists that the award came as a bit of a shock to him aswell. Mr Doey is a past pupil of the school and has a strong identity with the local community.

“I am very humbled to be nominated for such an award and I am very fortunate to be able to learn from my colleagues because I have only been teaching for three years.

“I was made aware of the nomination last January and it was totally out of the blue and I was not expecting it at all because I am not anything special but it has encouraged me a lot going forward in my career,” said Jonny.

You can vote for Geoff and Jonny when the polls open on Monday, February 18 via the Families First Awards Northern Ireland website.
