COLERAINE Rugby Club is remaining tight-lipped following calls for spectators who shouted sexist verbal abuse at a female referee to be named and shamed.

There have also been demands on social media for the club to ban the four men responsible for life and calls for sponsors to reconsider their club links “in light of this shameful episode.”

After the BBC revealed leaked details of the abuse faced by referee Grainne Crabtree during the match in Coleraine in March, there were angry Facebook exchanges about the spectators' “disgusting behaviour” and growing demands for them to be publicly outed.

Dominic Doherty asked: “Have Coleraine Rugby Club identified the four men responsible for the abuse and banned them for life? If not, why not? What specific measures have Coleraine Rugby Club identified and implemented to prevent a recurrence of an incident of this nature.

“Are any of Coleraine Rugby Club's sponsors reviewing their relationship with the club in light of this shameful episode? Their customers surely need to know whether they are shopping at businesses that turn a blind eye to this type of incident.”

He added: “This is disgusting and the four individuals concerned should be named and shamed for their pathetic conduct. Plenty of people will know who they are.”
