ROYAL Portrush is being linked with a sensational staging of the Ryder Cup in 2022 - if Rome's Marco Simone Golf and Country Club fails to host the event.

With suspicions over the readiness of the Italian venue, organisers are currently considering their options.

Adare Manor in Limerick is regarded as the favourite to step in if required, with the revamped Dunluce Links also in the frame.

The news comes less than eight months before Royal Portrush Golf Club hosts The Open Championship for a second time - and the first since 1951.

The countdown to the tournament is well underway, with much of the groundwork having being complete.

The first lorries are due on site at the start of April to begin putting together the huge infrastucture and then it will be all systems go for the 148th Open.
